Compeyre, a hilltop village in the heart of the Grands Causses

Perched on the heights between the Tarn Valley and the Lumensonesque Valley, the medieval village of Compeyre has a rich history dating back to the 1st century A.D.
Its strategic location once earned it the status of a royal town and an important role in controlling the roads of the Millau region. Facing due south, the village was also renowned for its vineyards and wine production. At that time, there were as many as 80 wine cellars in the town, and Compeyre held a monopoly on wine in the Tarn Valley for much of the Middle Ages.
The Wars of Religion brought an end to this prosperity in the early 17th century, when the king ordered the fortress to be dismantled.
Today, Compeyre charms visitors with its narrow streets, stone houses, terraced gardens, and the peaceful atmosphere typical of villages in southern Aveyron. A few historical remnants still bear witness to its past.
You can find l’detailed history of the village of Compeyre on the official Compeyre website.
